I think it’s time to refer to every car by its chassis code. “My grandma just picked up a YF3 Pilot Touring. It’s loaded and pretty nice, even if it’s a big crossover.”

GMT325/330/355 UBER ALLES
High performance variants, naturally.

I like chassis codes! I drive a SN95 and a GMT400 now, but I used to have a couple of MN12s, one a Cougar and the other a Thunderbird. They were essentially the same car except that one had a V6 and the other a V8.

I hate chassis codes. Makes me feel like someone’s speaking a different language around me just to exclude me.
I don’t care what chassis code your BMW or MB is anyways. Meh.

See my user display name. RPO codes for maximum confusion.

You drive a BMW 3 series with a 2.o turbo and a 6 speed stick.
So....

Unless you know you’re speaking to someone who is part of the same community as you, chassis codes can fuck off.
I won’t hesitate to call my s2000 an ap2 around s2000 people, but if I’m just around a car person I just call it a second generation or facelifted s2000.

I drive a F15. If it was awd, I would have a YF15.

You know if you had an X5 instead of an X6, they would have matching codes.

I used to drive an MK74, but now I drive a WK2.
Still miss my CD5 somedays.

MB people have been doing this for eons (usually in combination with model), when the same model number can exist over several platforms, it just makes sense. Simply saying “I have a 300SE” or “200D” doesn’t work.

I missed a bit of information from that, hah.

This is no new thing to me and my fzj80. Japanese chassis codes are easy though, I would never call my old VW A5 PQ35

When there’s little discernible difference to the untrained eye, as in an AP1/AP2, or if the chassis codes do not change between generations, as in 1st gen PL Neons versus 2nd gen PL Neons, there’s no need to use the codes to tell someone outside the community what kind of car you drive.

Apparently I drive an A. Also, apparently it has a 5 speed. I always thought it was a 4 speed since it is a GM piece of crap.
My car is an XD2. It is not exciting at all; XD, except if you compare it to the AL. I am looking forward to getting my XD2 fixed, so my wife can have her A back.

Maybe that would help get some “trucks” and “SUVs” of the road. When people go to buy a Ridgeline and see its just a Pilot/Odyssey maybe they won’t. Same with Rav4/Corolla, etc.

My TSX’s chassis code is CU2. It’s a fairly common thing among enthusiast owners to say “I see you too” when meeting each other.

I miss my CE1 sometimes, even though the trans was slipping, and it overheated a lot:

I’m still tempted to pick up a nice, low-mileage (relative to the age, of course) CD7 with a manual. But then I’m like, dat BB6 doe ...

So that would be 551A, L040, 01519 and 01611. Way too complicated

You can find a decent manual BB6 for dirt cheap these days.

We had a CD7 with a manual at work yesterday for new beige leather. It had 388k miles on it. Green over beige EX-L; the guy bought it brand new in ‘95 and said he’s keeping it until it dies.

That is a good man.
My CD5 survived one engine swap before being stolen. Otherwise, there’s a good chance I’d still have it.

At a certain car model only meet or forum, yes. But in a general setting like Jalopnik or Oppo, or at an all-makes car meet its pretentious.
“Hey, what car is yours?”
“Its the MT367 85CS G548 with the rare WUBWUBWUB in it”.
“Oh, the 87 Fiero over there with the neat little doohickey on the dash? Cool. I brought my mom’s Explorer.”

Apparently my Legacy is a BP, my Raider is an L040, and I’m fairly that Volvo 144Ss is both the model name and chassis code

I’d trade mine for a running A70 Supra. But I don’t know of anyone who would make that trade.

I’m partial to the A60, personally.
You own a BB6? How has it been for you?

A facelifted A70 was the one that got away for me. A few years ago my dad said a coworker of his had one that he was going to sell for cheap and wanted to know if I wanted it. I did, but he got rid of it before I could even look at it. Ever since then a small part of me has wanted an A70.
My BB6 is a good car. It’s moderately modified. Engine swap, weight reduction, bolt-ons. It’s quick, faster than 350Z’s and pre-Coyote Mustangs. Unfortunately it makes my back hurt whenever I drive it now.

So true.
Like I had a DC5, it was ok, I personally kind of wanted a DC2 since they had more aftermarket and double wishbone front and rear. I had a friend with a show DA that was really into it. Also learned how to drive stick on a DC2 so I have a soft spot.
Friend picked up an E30. Made me look around for an E46, still kind of am. The E90 though is definitely peaking my interest, manual 6 speed twin turbo AWD sounds pretty enticing. The E92 though I think is not as pretty.
I picked up an S30, but younger crowd definitely is not familiar with that chassis code. They know the S13, S14, S15, but talk about the S30 and you kind of get a blank stare, then you say you have a 240, and they go oh yea you mean an S13, and you have to explain no a 240z, not a 240sx, they they kind of get a little confused again.
Like if you know chassis codes, those conversations are vivid pictures, vs oh I had an Integra, I always wanted an Integra, but I got an Integra, my friend used to have an Integra.

Man the Honda kids will love this one. Use it all you like, DC3 will never be S13

I only know German codes. Well, I do know some Toyota engine codes, but I don’t want to.
